EPS file contains two presentations for graphic: PostScript language version and bitmap version. PostScript printers use PostScript language version to produce high-quality results. Most word processing programs show bitmap while editing, as they cannot understand PostScript language graphics.

Now, if printing is done without PostScript language capability, bitmap version is used, and result is not good. If one wants to print high quality printout to non-PostScript printer, there should be PostScript interpreter involved.

There is good freely availbale PostScript interpreter Ghostscipt that works in most platforms. It is highly recommended, if one works with PostScript files regularily. Macintosh contains similar as build-in feature, and Linux distributions usually contain Ghostscipt already.
